Are there any types of Dividend?

Yes, there are a few types of dividends a company can pay to its shareholders.

Types of dividends

There are various types of dividends a company can pay to its shareholders.  We you bring a list of the types below and how are they offered to the shareholders.

Cash – Most common type of dividend i.e. paying cash to each shareholder. The payout is made via electronic payment usually or by cheque

Stock – This type is where new shares are issued to shareholders.  The proportion of shares issued are as a ratio like 2:1 etc, so they are based on the shares owned.

Assets – A company can even pay dividend in terms of physical assets or investment securities, however, this is very rare.

Special – this is a dividend that’s paid apart from the regular intervals like quarterly, annual etc. This happens when the company has excess cash.

Miscellaneous – Sometimes companies pay dividends in the form of options or shares in a new company too among other options.

Buyback is when a company buys its own shares from the open market. This returns capital back to the shareholders and adding value. It also reduces the number of Shares outstanding of the company thereby boosting its EPS (Earning Per share) when (net earnings/shares outstanding) is reduced the EPS automatically increases.  This is also a commonly used strategy but can’t be called Dividend.
